Lilies are one of the top 3 most popular flowers for gardens everywhere and must ranks amongst the most glamorous and imposing of all. Also great favourites for the vase, the genus is now a very wide one with groups suitable for the patio in pots, herbaceous border, conservatory and for cutting. Lilies associate extremely well in the garden with Roses, as well as herbaceous perennials. The all pervasive perfume of many kinds of Lily has unodubtedly increased their attraction. Lily bulbs should be planted in groups of 3 for the best effect. They prefer a position in full sun, or at leasy part sun, and a fairly well drained soil. Set the bulbs 6" deep in the soil, and space them 4-6" apart. You can add a mulch of organic matter after they have started to shoot above ground and the new stems will then produce roots as well, helping them to anchor more firmly against wind.
